Human Hair Wig FAQs

On this page, Ruby Renee Wigs answers your Human Hair FAQS: what you need to know, what you want to know, and the information you may never have thought to ask about wigs. With so much information circulating around about wigs, it might seem overwhelming. With all the various types, materials, and style options, whether it’s your first time wearing a wig, or you’ve been playing the trial and error game when selecting a wig. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about wigs:

  1. What are the different types of wigs and how do you know which one is the best for you?

“Wig Types” can be most commonly broken down into 2 categories human hair and synthetic hair. There is an ongoing debate about the pros and cons of both, for more information see Human Hair Wigs vs. Synthetic Hair Wigs.

  1. How do I get it the color I want? Are all wigs dyed?

This question is only relevant to human hair wigs.

  1. What size wig do I need?

The “size” of your wig is determined by the size cap you need. The cap is the material which your head comes directly in contact with. During the wig making process hair is attached to the cap in typically 2 forms the top and the wefts. Typically caps come in 3 sizes: small, medium, and large. 95% of female wig wearers fall into the medium category, but always try before you buy. Once a cap size is selected a skilled wig stylist will be able to alter the piece to even more snuggly fit your head shape.

  1. How do I ensure my wig doesn’t fall off?

There are 2 primary methods that help keep a wig from falling off. The first and most is clips/combs sown into the cap that connect to ay preexisting hair at the temples. The second method is a “wig band” either made of non-slip material or silicone that sits on your head like sweat band and uses friction to keep the wig from sliding off. Here is the wig band that we recommend and have seen great results with.

  1. How do I care for my wig?

The great thing about quality wigs is that after they are washed and set, they usually can stay in style for up to a month or two, even more so for synthetic wigs. Our suggestion, for quality Human hair wigs, is that they are brought to a wig stylist every couple of months for a wash and set and treated at home in between with wig-specific products.

  1. What is the best way to store my wig when I’m not wearing it?

A wig stand or mannequin head is ideal for storing your wig. It allows the wig to hand naturally, avoiding tangles and maintaining its style. You can find numerous styles online for reasonable prices. Once on the stand or head, keep it in a low humidity, cool area if avoiding direct sunlight if possible.
