Coping With Wig Wearing Anxieties And Emotions

Wearing a wig is a deeply personal journey, and it comes with many different emotions. While all of these feelings are natural and normal, they can be difficult to deal with and use to your advantage. That’s okay! We’re here to help.

In this article, we’re talking about the most common emotions and anxieties that wig wearers find themselves feeling, especially at the beginning of the journey. Then, we’re giving you three relatable pieces of advice to help you feel comfortable and confident every time you wear a wig.

Why Do You Feel Anxious While Wearing A Wig?

It’s only natural to feel some anxiety while wearing a wig, especially the first few times you do it. This is a new experience and it’s going to take some getting used to. You don’t have to feel this way for long, though. Start by identifying why you feel anxious in the first place. Most find their anxiety surrounding some main topics:

  • Fear of being judged by someone else because of the wig
  • Anxiety due to lack of familiarity with the wig

How Can You Feel More Confident In Your Wig?

Once you’ve identified the reasons for your feelings, you can begin working through them. Are you afraid someone will comment on your wig? Do you worry it will slip out of place while you’re in public? Whatever it is, you are strong enough to grow from this experience. Here are three reminders to help you start working through your anxieties and feeling more confident in your wig.

1.   NO ONE IS PAYING ATTENTION ANYWAY

Research shows that people have more than 6,000 thoughts per day, and most aren’t even remembered long term. Your wig is honestly the last thing on their minds. It’s easier said than done in the beginning, but try not to make decisions based on how you think others might view you. Your confidence will improve when you continue to make decisions for yourself.

2.   DON’T BE AFRAID TO PRACTICE

If your wig still feels foreign and unfamiliar to you, take the time to practice with it. Experiment with different styles and start developing an idea for how you’d like to look in it. When you feel more comfortable with a wig, your confidence when wearing it will soar.

3.   OWN IT LIKE THE AMAZING PERSON YOU ARE

The fact that you wear a wig has done nothing to your value as a person, and it’s important to take time and remember that. You are still the same person you were before you started wearing a wig (and are probably even stronger, now!), so wear it with pride. Using techniques like positive self-talk can help with improving your confidence.

KNOW THAT YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL WITH AND WITHOUT

It doesn’t really matter whether you’re wearing a wig, have your natural hair, or go with no hair at all. There are still so many other radiant elements to your personality and appearance that are worth appreciating and acknowledging. Take the time to look in the mirror and list 5 qualities you love about yourself that have nothing to do with your hair.
